It is found in different layers in sediment rocks and with that you can date it in relation with other fossils in other sediment layers.
Bailey Lares: Any form of dating that is currently used is based on many unprovable assumptions. If those assumptions are correct, then the earth is much older than YECs think. However, there is no way to prove those assumptions. Do we know how much was in the sample originally? Do we know that the decay rate has been the same? Do we know that the sample has never been contaminated? How do you know that any one kind of animal is older than others? I have seen bird footprints in the same layer as dinosaur footprints.
